Ken Left Me Home—and Almost Took the Car Key

A Dallas airport key rescue, a birthday rave with the grandkids, and my big plans for a quiet week.

Ken runs back with the car key at Dallas Love Field while Mel talks to Kelsey in their red Jeep, with Rory and baby Levi in the back.
Ken was leaving. Apparently, so was the key.

On Sunday morning, Ken flew out to Washington, DC. Yes, you read that right. KEN left ME at home. I am not entirely sure how that happened, but it did.

Of course, first we had to get him to the airport. We drove up to Dallas Love Field with Kelsey and the kids, which made the whole thing easier for me. Rory sang the whole way to Dallas. Our own little concert, and honestly, it was super cute.

Then we dropped Ken off and almost sent the car key to Washington with him.

Here is something I learned on this trip: my Grand Cherokee will drive away without the key inside it. Quite a ways, actually.

Who gets out of the car and doesn’t give you the key? How does that even happen?

We were almost out of the airport before we realized we did not have it. Ken did. Because apparently, him leaving me was not enough. He was taking the ability to restart my car, too.

Thankfully, he ran back outside and gave us the key. Otherwise, we would have been stranded in Dallas waiting for someone to drive up with our spare. With two kids. That would have SUCKED.

Key recovered, husband successfully dropped off, Kelsey took over driving us to the Sheraton in downtown Dallas. I love that hotel. The staff is friendly, and we were lucky enough to get upgraded to an executive suite. When you are traveling with two kids, a little extra room is a very good thing.

The reason for our Dallas stay was our grandson Cisco’s second birthday. His party was a rave for kids.

Now, my desire to attend a rave at any point in my life has always been no. Just no. Yet here I was, going to a rave with my children and grandchildren. Apparently, that is how they get you.

It ended up being pretty great for the kids. Gabe won first prize in a costume contest and came away with a fancy electric scooter. Sophie won second place in her age bracket and got some Demon Hunters thing. I cannot tell you exactly what it was, but it was pretty cool that they both won prizes.

I also finally got to give the kids the cowboy boots we bought for them on our way to Florida. Birthday celebrations, costume prizes, cowboy boots—we had a lot going on.

We ended up staying an extra night in Dallas because, well, why not? It was a lazy day. Ish. As lazy as a day with two kids can be. I have learned that the terrible twos are no joke. The executive suite was appreciated.

We made it back to the house Tuesday afternoon, and Austin came to pick up Kelsey and the kids shortly after we got home.

Then it was chill mode for me. All the way. Ken was not supposed to be home until Sunday, and that was my plan until then. Just me, some quiet, and absolutely no more raves.

To be continued…
