Today, we packed everything up—again—and officially pointed the car toward home.
There's a strange part of every long trip when you're ready for your own bed, ready to stop living out of bags, and yet still not quite ready for the adventure to be over.
As Colorado Springs disappeared behind us, Amarillo became the next dot on the map, and we settled in for another day on the road. But we had plans for the trip home—things we hadn't done even though we've lived in Texas for almost 20 years.
We drove along Route 66 and stopped at Cadillac Ranch to take some photos. Should we have bought spray paint? Probably.
We also went to The Big Texan for dinner, and the food did not disappoint. What did disappoint us was that no one decided to attempt the 72-ounce steak challenge while we were there.
On the way back to the hotel, we found a small park called Slug Bug Ranch. Notice the play on words here—it was basically the Volkswagen Beetle version of Cadillac Ranch. It was also very cool and completely unique.
We made the most of our last couple of days on the road—and I don't think I've ever slept as well as I did the night we finally arrived back home.
